Overview
This assignment provided a crucial opportunity to address a long-standing design challenge for our Oala Dhivehi books: updating the level indicator badges. I am highly satisfied with applying CRAP principles to these designs, greatly enhancing their usability and visual clarity across the app.
My logo design process centered on clear differentiation and brand identity.
Levels 1 (ages 3-5) 2 (ages 6-8), and 3 (ages 9-11) are distinctly identified by the Dhivehi alphabet sequence: ށ, ހ, and ނ, respectively. The logo also features 'ފަށާ ހުނަރު 2.0' and a line-art hammer, symbolizing 'skills' for our 'First Skills' framework. This graphic choice also prepares for future thematic differentiation (e.g., a book graphic for an 'early reading skills' framework). Emphasizing simplicity in graphics and size was key for maximum visibility and shape recognition, even when scaled down. While color is a secondary differentiator, I prioritized accessibility: my chosen shades (Level 1: #004f9e [deep blue]; Level 2: #A30000 [deep red]; Level 3: #005C00 [strong green]) achieve contrast ratios of 8.03:1 to 8.29:1 against white. This exceeds WCAG AAA standards.
When placing the indicators on digital covers, a key structural change involved moving the badge from the bottom-left to the top-right for improved visibility.
