Reflection on Assessment Creation

The ability to create interactive and creative assessments has been the highlight of this week. I thought deeply about how to design multiple-choice, matching, and short-answer questions for Level 2 learners (ages 6-8) while keeping them engaged. For this particular assessment, I focused on Module 1.2: Dhivehi Mask Creation (Topic: Emotions).

I had to make a strategic decision regarding the feedback. When I initially set it to be immediate after each question, I found the user experience flow wasn't the best. Therefore, for this summative assessment, I decided to provide all the feedback at the end.

For the final short-answer question, which is teacher-graded, the learner will not receive an immediate result. They will, however, get the answers to all the other questions at the end of the assessment, and the teacher will later grade the last question.

Aligning Assessment to Learning Objectives

This exercise reinforced the importance of aligning every question to a specific learning outcome. My assessment was designed to test the following objectives:

• LO7: Comprehension: I created questions that measure the learner's comprehension of emotion words by asking them to match a written word to its corresponding visual representation (the monster faces).

• LO2: Rhyme Awareness & LO3: Phoneme Awareness: These audio-based matching questions test foundational phonetic skills in a fun, interactive way. By matching sounds to words and letters, the learner demonstrates an understanding of the building blocks of language.

• LO6: Vocabulary Knowledge: I included questions that measure vocabulary recall and comprehension by asking the learner to apply a known color word to a visual cue, using our familiar 'Maali' character.

• MLO 1.2.3: Explain Choices: The short-answer question at the end assesses the learner's ability to explain their choices in simple sentences.​

Insights & Future Applications

I am loving the available options to create assessments that show progress in multiple areas. This exercise gave me significant insight into how I can start aligning questions with Bloom’s Taxonomy. For this age group, I am focused on testing for "remember," "understand," "apply," and "analyze," as "evaluate" and "create" would be emerging at best and are not the primary focus. I think this experience gave me enough insight to start thinking deeply about how I can align questions in relation to Bloom's Taxonomy in the future.
