Reflection on Assessment Creation

This week truly put into perspective how a well-structured approach like Understanding by Design (UbD) and agile models like SAM2 can be used to quickly create discussion and assignment prompts that genuinely reflect a learner’s understanding and comprehension. This process, however, also highlighted the technical challenges of my chosen Learning Management System (LMS). While the platform is powerful, I am bothered by the lack of control over the user interface, which I believe needs significant tweaks to be truly suitable and intuitive for young learners. The steep learning curve of the LMS is a trade-off I am willing to accept, given its other powerful features, but it underscores the ongoing challenge of making robust tools accessible for all audiences.

Module Learning Objective(s) Alignment:

• MLO 1.1.1: By the end of the lesson learners (Oala Learner Level 2) will be able to recall 4-6 Dhivehi emotion words with correct pronunciation.

• MLO 1.1.2: By the end of the lesson learners (Oala Learner Level 2) will be able to explain their decoration choices using simple sentences.

Learning Materials and Activities:

• Activity 1: Exploring Emotion Words (Acquisition): Learners watch a short video (“Discovering Emotion ޖަޒުބާތު”) on Oala.app, introducing 6 emotions, repeating words for pronunciation.

• Activity 2: Sustainable Emotion Word Decoration (Production): In-person, they cut cardboard letters of an emotion word, color, and decorate with recycled scraps. The teacher models phrases to scaffold simple sentence explanations. Learners present their decorated word, saying, “I used red ރަތް for އުފާ.”
